Protecting women's rights makes the world a better place According to the UN, “gender
equality and the empowerment of women and girls is not just a goal in itself, but a key
to sustainable development, economic growth, and peace and security” Laws and policies
prohibit women from equal access to land, property, and housing. Economic and social
discrimination results in fewer and poorer life choices for women, rendering them
vulnerable to trafficking. Gender-based violence affects at least 30% of women globally.
Women are the primary caretakers of children and elders in every country of the world.
International studies demonstrate that when the economy and political organization of
a society change, women take the lead in helping the family adjust to new realities
and challenges. Primarily meant to provide protection to the wife or female live-in
partner from domestic violence at the hands of the husband or male live-in partner
or his relatives, the law also extends its protection to women living in a household
such as sisters, widows or mothers. To allow her to be herself at all times is true
freedom. Freedom is being allowed to express who you are without fear of discrimination
or ostracism. But freedom also means being responsible for your expression, understanding
it and being true to it. In accordance with social tradition and English common law, women
were were denied most legal rights. In general they could not vote, own property, keep their
own wages, or even have custody of their children. 'Police' and 'Public Order' are State
subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India. State Governments are thus
responsible for safety and security of the citizens including women and girls. However, safety
and security of women and children in the country is utmost priority for the Government.
